17 INDEPENDENT PUNK SHOPS YOU SHOULD SUPPORT

SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY

When it comes to true, modern punk stores you’d find me turning my nose up pretty quickly. It’s hard to find a genuine, authentic one-stop shop in this millenial age. While they are few and far between, below you’ll find some serious collections and brick-and-mortar stores that are good for a stroll or internet browse.

14. Descontrol Punk Shop

LA is punk as hell and ready to prove it. Run out of a small space in the middle of the Los Angeles wasteland, this punk shop has it all. Whether you’re looking for shirts or leather goods, belts or shoes or pouches and more. You will find something in this California crypt you can’t walk away without .

Keep up with the shop on their Instagram or buy directly from them on their webstore and Etsy.

15. Primitive Ritual

Primitive Ritual ain’t fuckin’ around. In true Boston fashion, the small, dedicated shop sells an array of bracelets, bootstraps, wallets, dangles, accessories, and loose studs of your choosing. Each item is beautiful and it is clear that care and craftmanship have gone into every piece. The webstore even has a sale right now on high quality leather dog leashes so you may be fully decked doing the most masterful dog duties.

Head over to their Instagram to fill your feed with the most stunning pictures of leather gear you’ve ever seen and then head over to Primitive Ritual’s super user friendly website for great sales on quality gear.

16. Bad Dog

‘Weirdo’ is alive and well in Echo Park. While it’s just a quick drive through Chinatown from ‘chain punk’ heaven Descontrol, Bad Dog gives home to all the eggheads of Los Angeles. Shop owner Zoey Zag describes it best herself,

“THE STORE WAS INSPIRED BY THE IDEA THAT LA NEEDS A MEETING SPOT. WHERE CAN THE WEIRDOS HANGOUT? MEET OTHER WEIRDOS. START A BAND. START SOMETHING. BAD DOG EXISTS  BECAUSE OF THE NOSTALGIA BEHIND THE DINER WHERE YOU COULD RUN INTO ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS. NO PHONES NEEDED. YOU KNEW THEY WOULD BE THERE. SMALL TOWN SHIT. THE COMMUNITY OF ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS IS INFACT SMALL, IT JUST HAPPENS TO BE SPREAD OUT LIKE BUTTER ON TOAST. SO FAR BAD DOG HAS BEEN THAT DREAM. A PLACE TO TAKE BAND PHOTOS, DO A NARCAN TRAINING COURSE, HAVE A ZINE RELEASE PARTY, OR JUST HANG OUT ALL DAY AND WATCH TV. UP TO YOU.

“IN THE SHOP THERE IS A WALL OF ZINES, MILK CRATES OF RECORDS FROM CURENT BANDS, AND TONS OF BOOTLEG PUNK SHIRTS. THE GOAL WAS TO GET THE COMMUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE, FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. THE ONLINE AND IN PERSON EXPERIENCE ARE VERY DIFFERENT. SO COME CHECK OUT ALL OF THE STUFF BAD DOG CARRIES. ONLINE BAD DOG FOCUSES ON ONE OF A KIND PRODUCTS, LEAVING THE STORE AS A MUST SEE IN PERSON LOCATION.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. The atmosphere is a must to witness first-hand. While the webstore focuses primarily on Bad Dog’s own creative licensing, in-person you’ll find everything from jewelry and dangles to Lumpy Rex records and kitchy household decorations.

Follow them on Instagram to stay-up-to-date with LA’s premiere weirdo hangout spot.

17. Street Fever

Punk Alley is THE East Coast destination for any degenerate. While it’s the home of NYC staples such as Primitive Language, Better Read Than Dead, and Rebel Rouser, the main attraction in this container shop strip mall has to be Street Fever.

Ran and operated by one of the Warthogs, Sully, the shop is everything grit and grime of New York punk. Here you can get a tattoo, pick up a to-scale scythe, or simply relax and listen to one of Sully’s personally crafted mixtapes. The container itself is an I Spy of interesting finds stacked from floor to ceiling, with classic kitsch for all your decorating needs.

Street Fever always has amazing vintage clothing, which you can find on Depop if don’t feel like paying the New York tolls to get into the city. DM Sully on Instagram to make an appointment to put needle-to-skin and follow the shop to know when to hang out in Punk Alley.
